Farewell
Day 16: Breakfast and then...
Ever
efficient George organizes ride-shares to the airport. My group tips generously (sorry, Rick) and
the driver protests that we have given him too much. One of the passengers insists that we want
him to have it. Recalling one of
George’s stories about workers in the former communist bloc countries never being
shown appreciation for their work, I add, “We appreciate having you drive us
to the airport.” A slow smile spreads across his face, and he bids us farewell.
After I return home from a trip, and my friends question me about what I saw and did, I find myself talking about the people I meet and the funny things that happen (getting locked in a restroom in a museum). It’s not just the places we see that make the trips memorable, but the people on the bus with you, the accommodating bus drivers, and the enthusiastic guides. Thank you all for a wonderful ride through Eastern Europe!
